Description:
On the slopes of Monte Pisano, in an area where the characteristic elements are the green landscapes, the springs and the waterways as well as the quiet, are located Sant'Andrea and Pieve di Compito, the village of the Camellias, which every spring is invaded by the joyful, explosive, colorful flowering of this amazing plant, celebrated by the Spring Exhibition of the Ancient Camellias of the Lucchesia, which has reached its XXXVI edition in 2025.
Since the eighteenth century, this oriental plant with amazing flowers has found a perfect microclimate here, which makes it grow lush and wise men have created hundreds of cultivars, whose names recall facts and characters of the time.
We will leave in the morning from the village of Sant'Andrea climbing up a hill above Pieve di Compito, along a dirt road between vegetable gardens and gardens that will turn into a path among the olive trees.
We will be able to admire this small and unique valley from above, with its alleys and terraces, and the panorama open to the east until we glimpse the Lago della Gherardesca.
We will descend into the valley towards San Ginese crossing the old Lucca - Pontedera railway, decommissioned in 1944, and we will arrive at the route of the ancient Via di San Colombano, which later became the southern variant of the more famous Via Francigena.
This important road will take us back to Sant'Andrea, with a beautiful view of Lucca. Last but not least, we will dedicate ourselves to visiting the town, among alleys, gardens, the only Italian cultivation of tea camellia of Chiusa Borrini and, of course, the visit to the wonderful Camelieto nestled in the green and pulsating heart of the Mount.
The tour will take place on Sunday 16 March, Monday 17 March and Sunday 30 March 2025.
