Manarola

The village has very old origins, however, it is difficult to trace a well-defined historical profile given that the little bibliography available only presents hypothesis. The gothic style church from 1338 is in a dominant position uphill, above the residential area. The cove is sheltered by a closed gorge located between two rocky promontories. Following the old bridle paths for about 15 minutes, one reaches the village of Corniglia. There are two possible ways to chose from depending on the time one has available for the walk. If you aren’t in a hurry, you can do the “Birolli” walk  
  which leads to Palaedro. It is a 250 meters section which turns around the Punta Bonfiglio and which has recently been equipped with a playground and a petanque field. Otherwise,  you can clamber up the slope which leads to the cemetery of Manarola where the path continues evenly now, skirting the sea. The last section of the path is characterised by a long gravelled and pebbled beach which takes the place of the rocky cliffs.
